Let me take a moment to tell you a true and personal story where an employment lawyer made a big difference. A few years ago, someone I knew was being tested for cancer. She knew she had a complex medical problem and was working with her doctors to rule out some of the more serious conditions. Two weeks after she first heard the “C-word” as a potential reason she was ill, she was fired. The company didn’t blatantly state that she was fired due to illness and they came up with a trumped up reason to put down on the paperwork. She’d been a wonderful employee during her time with that company. She built a whole new department from scratch. She’d helped boost the bottom line in a tangible way. She got along with her fellow employees and had received several accolades while working there. However, for some strange reason two weeks after sharing her medical worries with her manager, she was no longer a wonderful employee and had to be fired.
Getting fired is bad enough for a healthy person, but when someone is facing a serious medical condition it can be devastating. COBRA payments are insanely expensive and without medical insurance all of her tests had to be put on hold. She tried to find work for a while and kept hitting dead ends all the while the threat of cancer hung over her head. Many friends advised her to seek an employment lawyer and after a while she hired an employment law firm. The company settled out of court for “wrongful discharge.” It seems they not only fired her, but also were failing to provide an accurate and legal reference. Sometimes just knowing someone has an employment lawyer can make a company jump. No one wants the negative PR from firing a sick employee.
The story ended well. After a while, I found…”she” found…employment that “she” loves and the doctors determined “her” condition was not cancer, but another serious but manageable condition.
Some stories really do have happy endings and getting legal representation can help achieve that.
